In today’s Queens Speechoutlining the Government’s priorities in the next session of Parliament Her Majesty announced that:

Measures will be brought forward to ensure that children have the best start in life, prioritising their early years.

George Hosking, WAVE Trust CEOsaid:

“This is very welcome news indeed. For many years it has been clear that prioritising the early years of a baby’s life gives them the best start possible. This positive start in life will lead to reductions in levels of societal violence, drug use and physical and mental health problems in later years.

"It is to be hoped that the Government’s commitment in today’s Queen’s Speech reflects a commitment to enact the recommendations of the recent Leadsom review, ‘The best start for life: a vision for the 1,001 critical days'."

How this announcement will support WAVE’s vision

WAVE's vision is a safer world where levels of violence are reduced and children’s physical health, mental health and life chances are maximised as they are not adversely impacted by early life trauma.

Children have the right to experience happy childhoods, where the wellbeing that they experience builds their resilience and is a foundation for a happy and fulfilled life. However, we know that the trauma caused by childhood adversity is at the heart of many problems in our society today, including levels of violence. This is a world social and health crisis.

WAVE is therefore striving for a world where levels of violence are reduced because of the detrimental impacts of early life trauma on children, and the adults that they become, are avoided as the incidence of trauma experienced by children is low. Furthermore, if trauma is experienced, then it is identified at an early stage and appropriate support is provided.
